Prepare, Engage, Adapt, and Propel
The Learning Centers invite you to think of learning as academic fitness. To learn well, you need a good diet (all the academic content you take in) and regular exercise (actively using the content through homework, studying, tutoring and more).
The four steps to getting and staying academically fit are prepare, engage, adapt and propel.
1. Prepare
Set yourself up for success.
- Choose courses thoughtfully — aim for 15 credits including one course in your major and one required general education course.
- Optimize your syllabus.
- Use this worksheet to plan both study and self-care.
- Plan out your goals and action steps for the whole semester with this worksheet.
- Explore new ways to study.

2. Engage
Learning is both cognitive and social — through connection, your brain maximizes its learning power.
- Connect with your professors and learn how to make the most of office hours.
- Learn collaboratively.
- Leverage Rutgers Student Success resources.
3. Adapt
Change is the only constant, pay attention as your needs change and monitor how you are doing.
- Trying different study strategies for different types of tests.
- Get support through peer tutoring, writing tutoring, and academic coaching.
- Evaluate your learning and performance as you go.
4. Propel
Challenge yourself to move forward. Use setbacks to investigate and improve.
- Access instructors, tutors, and other students to help you on your journey.
- Discover new interests and talents by exploring what makes you curious.
- Make your learning more personally relevant by investigating research, experiential learning, internships, student organizations and more.
