Writing Tutor

Hi! My name is Jawharah, and I'm an undergraduate student studying biology. I'm excited to meet you all and be a part of your writing journey! English has been one of my favorite subjects which essentially led me to tutoring. This experience allowed me to develop various writing skills and techniques and I'm eager to share what I've learned with you. Writing is more than essays. It's a way to share our unique voices and communicate ideas. As a writing tutor, I hope to create a welcoming and supportive environment where students feel confident in achieving their writing goals. I look forward to working with you and seeing you grow as a writer!

Writing Tutor 

My name is Ayesha Babar, and I’m a student in the School of Arts and Sciences majoring in Public Health. I’m really excited to join the Learning Center this year as a writing tutor and to get to know everyone! Outside of school, I love reading all kinds of books, drawing, baking, and going to the gym. I’m also an aspiring physician and have always been interested in both physical and mental health. I’ve been able to explore these interests through my experiences as a crisis counselor, medical assistant, and volunteer in hospitals and clinics. Interestingly, drawing also got me interested in medicine, especially because I loved learning how to draw and understand the anatomy of organisms.

One thing I’ve learned through reading, art, and in healthcare is how important it is to stay curious and open to different perspectives. I believe education is most meaningful when it pushes us beyond what we already know and encourages us to look at ideas in new ways. I also think we learn best when we can connect with material in a way that feels interesting and relevant to us. As a writing tutor, I hope to create a comfortable and welcoming space where students can explore their ideas, find their own voice, and look at their writing from new perspectives. I’m looking forward to learning from everyone I work with just as much as I hope they can learn from me!

Hello! I’m Gwen, and this is my third year as a Graduate Student Writing Tutor. I am an avid reader, which makes me a strong writer. As a Teaching Assistant, I spent a lot of time instructing students on their writing, which is why I wanted to become a writing tutor with the Learning Center. I’m passionate about helping students with writing challenges to meet their goals, and I look forward to meeting new students this year.

Hello! My name is Chiara Giacomelli (she/her), and I am a junior double majoring in Theater Arts and English Lit, as well as being part of the Honors College. At Rutgers, I have served as an honors community mentor for the Honors College, and I currently work as a scarlet ambassador on campus. Besides being a writing tutor in the Learning Centers, I am also a writing assistant for the Principles of Literary Studies course. Additionally, in the past couple of years, student theater has occupied my time as my main campus involvement.

As a writing tutor, I aim to provide help to any of my peers who might need it, and my goal is to support all students who would like to strengthen their writing skills while maintaining a friendly and stress-free environment.

Hi, my name is Tessa! I'm a senior majoring in English and minoring in creative writing. I write everything -- fiction, poetry, screenplays, songs. I have a ton of creative passions, from singing, guitar, and banjo to acting, baking, and painting. Television is my great love, along with music (Kate Bush, the Clash, Public Enemy) and books (Kurt Vonnegut, Elena Ferrante, Lara Williams). I'm always excited to talk writing! Whether you're working on a creative project or an academic assignment, I want to help every student see the joy in writing and express themselves to the fullest.

Hello! My name is Erofili Kanterakis, and I am a writing tutor at the Rutgers Learning Centers. I am currently a sophomore in the School of Arts and Sciences and the Honors College, majoring in History and Political Science. I am also involved in the Honors College Media Team, Women's Political Caucus, and RUSH (Rutgers Undergraduate Society of History). This school year, I am so excited to contribute to the Rutgers community and students' academic success as a writing tutor!

Outside of academics, I love to read good books, go on long runs, and find new recipes to bake!

Hello! My name is Peter Karipidis. I am third-year undergraduate student studying Political Science at Rutgers University, New Brunswick. Being a Scarlet Knight has afforded me the academic and social opportunities to grow intellectually and introspectively. From volunteering for the move-in team to attending sports games to participating in club life, I have always prioritized making the most out of my college experience, a mindset that has encouraged me to become a writing tutor. 

Though developing my writing skills and tenure as a tutor, I believe that such growth comes from experience. Whether I’m tutoring or participating in activities to accentuate the presence of the Writing Center, such opportunities incentivize me to socialize with others and to educate myself more about our university. 

In my leisure, I enjoy cooking, baking, listening to music, walking, jogging, and participating in extracurricular activities.

My name is Shivangi Kori, and I am a Finance and Business Analytics & Information Technology student at Rutgers University New Brunswick, where I am part of the Honors College. Throughout my undergraduate career, I have developed a strong interest in finance, analytics, and using data to solve real-world business problems. I have also been involved in leadership and service organizations on campus, experiences that have strengthened my communication, collaboration, and mentorship skills. I am excited to bring these experiences to my role as a Writing Tutor at the Rutgers Learning Centers and help students become more confident and effective writers.

I was especially interested in becoming a Writing Tutor because I enjoy helping others communicate their ideas clearly and confidently. As a student who balances quantitative coursework with strong communication-focused experiences, I understand how important writing is across disciplines and not just in English courses. I hope to create a welcoming environment where students feel comfortable developing their ideas, strengthening their writing, and becoming more confident in their own voices. Rutgers has also given me countless opportunities to grow academically and personally, and I am excited to give back to the university community by supporting fellow students in reaching their goals.

Hi everyone! My name is Sophia Mendoza, and I am a current Pharmacy student through Rutgers’s Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy. Throughout my Rutgers academic career, I have been finding ways to integrate my STEM interests with my passion for writing. Between balancing humanities and physical science courses, to submitting research through Dialogues@RU, I have a lot of experience with finding the joy in whatever you intend to write about. 

Besides reading and writing, I love to explore new study spaces on campus with a sweet treat in hand.

My name is Neha, and I am a rising senior at Rutgers University majoring in Psychology. I am particularly interested in behavioral neuroscience and understanding the factors that influence why people think, feel, and behave the way they do. Outside of academics, I hold a black belt in Karate and enjoy staying active through pickleball, badminton, and swimming. I am honored to be part of the Rutgers tutoring team and look forward to creating a welcoming, supportive environment where my peers can build confidence in their writing and discover a greater appreciation for the writing process.

Hey everyone! I’m Safa Rahman, a second-year student at Rutgers University-NB majoring in Cell Biology & Neuroscience. I became a writing tutor because I believe writing is one of the most powerful tools we have, and I’m here to help you master it while staying true to your own voice. 

Besides my love for words, you can often find me baking a fresh batch of soft and gooey chocolate chip cookies, binge-watching the latest thriller shows, and exploring the outdoors.

Hello! My name is Karris Robertson, and I am a graduate student in Rutgers’ Graduate School of Education (GSE) working on my master’s in English Education. I graduated in May 2026 with a bachelor’s in English. I have been tutoring writing at Rutgers since September 2024. Armed with training from the Learning Center, along with my experiences from English pedagogy classes and student teaching, I want to do all I can to help you develop as a writer! 

My goal is for students to develop rich, well-supported, and authentic ideas in their writing. Every student has a unique and valuable perspective; I want to give writers the confidence to embrace their individuality and communicate it clearly and concisely. Whether you’re looking to conference about pre-writing, organizational structure, or draft editing, I have tips and tricks for you at any step of your process! 

Outside of writing, I enjoy playing the guitar, tennis, surfing, and reading. My favorite book is The Hobbit. Finding a balance between hobbies that are relaxing and fun, while also keeping your mind and body active is key to success as a student. I look forward to working together.

I’m Elizabeth Siaw, and I’m a plant biology graduate student in Rutgers' School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. I've been teaching and tutoring for over seven years and have assisted higher education students in need of writing support since 2021.  

As an international and first-generation graduate student, I know firsthand that academic writing can feel very intimidating at first glance (or assignment!). Whether you're trying to organize your ideas, improve clarity, or simply figure out a good place to start, my goal is to help make the writing process feel more approachable and something you can feel more confident about – and, at the very least, a little less stressful. 

Outside of work and research, you'll probably find me experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen, fiddling on the guitar or piano, or organizing activities for students to find community. I am excited to meet you, hear about your writing goals, and work through the writing process together!

Hi! My name is Carly Singer, and I am a rising senior. I am a Finance major at Rutgers Business School with a concentration in Real Estate and a minor in Economics. I really enjoy working with students and helping them become more confident in their writing! Outside of tutoring, I enjoy going to the gym, spending time with friends and family, watching movies, and going to the beach! I'm excited to continue being a part of Rutgers Learning Centers and look forward to helping you reach your academic goals!
